SUMMARY OF POSITIONThe Senior Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for developing and implementing mechanical design solutions for new and existing products in our IDEAL Electrical portfolio.
This role will carry out activities that include field research, design, prototyping, testing, and implementing manufacturing transition of new products.
IDEAL products cover a full spectrum of items in the field of Hand Tools, Benders, Fishtapes, Connectors, Testers, and DataComm devices.
The successful candidate will report to the Director of Engineering and work closely with our Product Management team, Manufacturing group, Quality Department, and Sourcing team.
PRIMARY
Responsibilities:

Design and develop new products to achieve the required functionality as set forth by our product criteria and design requirements.

Provide design leadership and project planning for new products through our stage gate development process:
Ideation, Concept generation (customer verification, prototype construction, cost analysis), Development of final design, Production release and formal Launch to the field.

Utilize computer-aided design (CAD) to create innovative, robust, and reliable designs that provide solutions to our customers needs.

Use Design for Manufacturing (DFM) practices, Failure Modes Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) while creating your designs
Keep material cost requirements and manufacturing needs in focus as you develop these new product ideas.

Perform field evaluations, collect, and analyze data on prototype samples and adjust finished designs as needed.

Present data and analyses to engineers and product management to lead design optimization.

Provide technical support for existing products involving specific applications, quality improvements, and cost reduction opportunities.

Develop the knowledge of current and anticipated agency requirements (i.
e.
, National Electrical Code (NEC), UL, CSA and applicable industry standards (i.
e.
ANSI, ASTM).

Participate in UL listing and CSA certification of assigned new products.
REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering
5-7 years of experience in mechanical design of any one of the following products:
forged hand tools, electrical connectors, sheet metal components, and injection molded plastic components
Project management experience in the design of in house manufactured and outsourced products
Expertise in using 3D modeling software; SolidWorks preferred
Working knowledge of materials science and mechanical properties of metals and polymers
Demonstrated sense of urgency and results-oriented
Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite of products including Excel and MS Project
